Rarely seen and vulnerable, this is the smallest of the wild cats (about 1⁄2 the size of an African Wildcat).
Identifying features include:
- Size: only 20 cm high
- Weight: 2 kg
- Brightly reflective eyes seen low on the ground.
- A short tail, less than half of the body length
- Heavily spotted body, with black soles on the feet
- Usually solitary
Little is known about the cat's exact distribution but it is found mainly in the arid parts of South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.
